Step-by-Step Installation

1. Plan your layout

Measure the bathroom and plan where the mats or cables go. Keep heating elements clear of areas where heavy fixtures such as baths or toilets sit, and avoid overlaps.

2. Prepare your sub-floor

Make sure the sub-floor is clean, dry and level. Remove debris and old flooring, and use a self-levelling compound on significant uneven areas for even heat distribution.

3. Install insulated backer boards

Fit an insulated tile backer board per the manufacturer's instructions to improve efficiency and provide insulation.

4. Lay the heating mats or cables

Roll out mats without overlap, or run cables along the designated areas, securing with tape. Leave space around edges for expansion and to prevent overheating near walls.

5. Connect the thermostat

Connect the heating cables to a junction box and wire the thermostat to the electrical supply, including a floor sensor to monitor temperature. Electrical work should be carried out by a qualified electrician.

6. Test the system

Before tiling, turn on the thermostat briefly to confirm everything works, then switch it off.

7. Apply tile adhesive

Use a notched trowel to apply an even layer of adhesive over the mats or cables, taking care not to damage the heating elements.

8. Lay the tiles

Work from one corner outward, pressing each tile firmly and level, using spacers for even grout lines. Allow the adhesive to cure.

9. Grout the tiles

Remove the spacers, apply grout, pack it tightly into the joints and wipe away the excess with a damp sponge. Allow to cure.

10. Final testing and setup

Do not switch the heating back on for 21 days, giving the cement-based adhesive time to fully cure. After 21 days, set your desired temperature and enjoy your warm tiled floor.
